Ahhhh…. The ringing of the school bell, the smell of dry erase markers fills the air, and the faint smell of old gym shoes greets me as I walk the 5 year old into school just 2 weeks ago. The day has FINALLY arrived! His anticipation is palpable as we walk across the street into the waiting area. Then he looks around, and realizes that there are a couple hundred kids here. Not just the 15 or so friends from class that he dealt with last year, but a WHOLE LOT of kids who don’t appear to be all that eager to be there. He turns to me and says, “I think I should start school tomorrow, Mom. I think I’m going to get a headache today.” I pat his shoulder, and try to reassure him that he’ll be just fine.
The first bell rings. That’s our signal to go down the hall to his room. We find his cubby for his backpack, I try to pry his hand out of mine as we walk into the classroom, but he’s got a death grip on me. I turn in the couple of items I forgot to take to the meet & greet the week before, and his teacher suggests that he go sit at his spot and share crayons with Michael. He sits down to his clown picture, scribbles black in the middle of the clown’s face, and says to me, “There, I’m done. He’s a dirty clown. Can we go now?” I say, “I’ll be back later to pick you up, Buddy. You have a good day.”
I TRY not to skip and giggle as I leave the building, big smile on my face, as I anticipate 6 ½ hours of solitude, with only the dog and 2 cats to talk to. Nobody to share a drink with, I can eat popcorn for lunch, without feeling guilty that I’m not providing a wholesome, well balanced meal for my growing child. Okay, I confess, the kid only eats like 5 different things, his favorite, and most preferred food being cereal. Usually right out of the bag or box, no milk even… so if I can just get him to eat ANYTHING I’m happy, but I have to make it LOOK good, right? I go home, turn the ringer on the phone way down, (I gave the school number a special ring, so I’d know if it was from there, everyone else can leave me a message, thank you very much!) and I go sit in my recliner, remote in hand, and realize that it’s been so long since anything but Noggin or Nick Jr. has been on television during the day, I have no idea what to watch! So I turn on some music, grab a book, and proceed to read about 4 pages, then fell into a peaceful, oh-so-sweet sleep for 4 hours. AHHHH…. MAN! I love September! NEXT week I’ll get caught up on housework and other stuff… THIS week is MINE!
